Dental Implant Procedures
These can vary, but most implants will insert a screw shaped titanium post into the socket wall after a tooth is removed. Surgery is performed either under local anaesthetic or under sedation and recovery time is usually around three to four weeks until all discomfort subsides.

Benefits of Dental Implants
Dental implants can solve tooth loss caused by many problems. It is possible to replace one or more missing teeth whether lost by:
- Decaying teeth
- Tooth loss by accident or trauma
- Tooth loss caused by gum disease
- Ageing
Confidence
Implants can offer many life changing benefits to the patient. They can improve quality of living because unlike dentures, implants will not move around, they feel natural and comfortable. Eating becomes a pleasure once more and speech is unaffected. This of course boosts self- esteem and confidence, too often lost by wearing dentures or having broken or missing teeth.
Safety
As the history of dental implants show, this is a tried and trusted procedure which has become a well- established dental solution for millions of patients. 90% of implants last for 15 years or more. Procedures are carried out with minimum discomfort in our modern well equipped practice.
What to expect
A thorough consultation followed by a small operation. Pain is controlled during the procedure either by a local anaesthetic or by intravenous sedation and afterwards pain relief is provided until the swelling and discomfort subside, normally after 3-4 weeks.
Background
Dental Implants have been discovered to date back as far as ancient Mayan Civilization. However what we would regard as the basis of modern implant surgery was developed in the 1950’s.
A Swedish orthopaedic surgeon, P. I. Branemark found in experiments that titanium fused with living bone. Dr. Leonard Linklow performed his first dental implant in 1952 and became known as the father of modern implant surgery and by 1992had placed 19,000 implants.
In 1965 in Sweden P.I. Branemark placed the first titanium implant and up until the present day millions of titanium implants have been successfully placed.
Most implants have the shape of a small screw made from pure titanium and feature either parallel or tapered sides.
