Considerations
In deciding if dental implants are suitable for our patients various factors must be considered.
Firstly, there needs to be enough bone in the jaw and that bone must be strong enough to support and hold an implant. It can be possible in such cases, where there is insufficient bone, to carry out a bone graft or ‘bone augmentation’.
Secondly the dental health of existing teeth and gums must be assessed. Treatment for gum disease and general dental hygiene may be necessary before further treatment can commence.
Thirdly, the patient’s lifestyle and habits need to be examined to assess whether implants are right for them. For example, excessive chewing or abnormal grinding and clenching may mean that the pressure put on the implants would be too great.
This is all part of the consultation process where it is our aim to give you the best advice and offer you the most appropriate treatment for your needs that is possible.
